Hardwood Refinishing

Hardwood Refinishing

Hardwood floor refinishing is essential to keep your floors looking as good as new.  If you have heard about the process but aren’t sure if it is time to do it at your home, take a look at the most common questions associated with the process before moving forward with any decisions.

Why do my floors need to be refinished?

Hardwood floors need to be refinished because the surface finish wears away over time. Without proper finish, your floor will be susceptible to permanent damage from spills and stains.

What exactly do refinishing means?

To refinish your hardwood floors, the surface of the floor needs to be adequately sanded. Sanding removes any excess finish, and it also keeps the floor smooth by removing scratches and scruffs. After the floor is completely sanded, new finish is applied as if the floor is a new install.

How do I know if my floors need to be refinished?

There is a simple test that you can do at home. Place a drop of water on your hardwood floor’s surface. If the water beads on the surface, then refinishing is not yet necessary. But, if the water is absorbed into the floor’s surface, then refinishing is needed. We do want to highlight that if the drop of water is consumed immediately, then it’s important to have the floors refinished as soon as possible.

Can other floors, like laminate and vinyl, be refinished?

There are some ways to refinish or reseal laminate floors, but these aren’t nearly as effective as hardwood refinishing. Other hard surface floor types such as vinyl cannot be refinished at all.

While it is possible for the skilled DIYer to refinish his or her hardwood floors, we firmly recommend relying on a professional for this task. Each hardwood floor is unique, so refinishing is often a complicated process.
